Texas Supreme Court Allows Ban on Gender-Transition Procedures for Minors to Take Effect (National Review)

The Texas Supreme Court has permitted a new law that bans gender-transition treatments for minors to come into effect. Previously, a lower court had temporarily halted the law, suggesting that the plaintiffs had a strong chance of succeeding based on state constitutional grounds. This decision was appealed to the Texas Supreme Court, which subsequently denied an emergency application to block the law.

The legislation prohibits doctors from prescribing hormones and puberty blockers to minors and from conducting gender-transition surgeries on them. Doctors who breach this law risk losing their medical licenses, and health insurance plans are barred from covering these gender-transition services.

This makes Texas the most populous state to enact such a ban, joining over 20 other states with similar laws.

US Deterrence against China Is Not Working (Hudson Institute)

An article from Hudson Institute argues that the United States’ current military strategy for deterring China is ineffective. The authors contend that the U.S. military’s eroding edge against China, particularly in the context of a potential conflict over Taiwan, necessitates a different approach.

They suggest that instead of focusing on military dominance to deter aggression, the U.S. should aim to make any conflict appear drawn-out and costly for China. The article calls for a long-term campaign that employs both military and nonmilitary means to undermine Beijing’s confidence in achieving its regional ambitions through force. The authors also criticize the lack of strategic focus in U.S. defense planning and advocate for a more nuanced approach that aims to shape the perceptions of Chinese leaders.

Iran’s New Patrons: Why China and Russia Are Stepping Up Their Support (Foreign Affairs)

An article from Foreign Affairs delves into Iran’s evolving geopolitical alliances, particularly its strengthening ties with China and Russia. Initially isolated due to its revolutionary zeal and hostility towards the West, Iran has found new patrons who are willing to challenge the liberal international order.

China provides Iran with sanctions-resistant trade and technological support, while Russia aids in modernizing Iran’s military. These alliances have emboldened Iran, reducing its international isolation and making it more secure and powerful. The partnerships come with strings attached, obliging Iran to make certain concessions, but they significantly undermine Western interests, especially concerning Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
